The Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association welcomes the school child to Deerfield with a number of age- appropriate, hands-on activities which are available throughout the school year. A summary of the school programs offered is listed below.

Indian House
A replica of a house which survived the 1704 attack on Deerfield, activities include:
Fireplace Cookery (seasonal), Colonial Life, Native American Life (in a bark wigwam, weather permitting), Textiles, Taverns, Historic Lights, Dame School (a 17th-18th C. school lesson), Early Farming, Stenciling (seasonal), and Neighbors and About Town (two different tours of the center of town).

Memorial Hall Museum
Activities include: 19th C. School Lesson, Old-Time Toys and Games, Sampler (a mini-tour of the museum), Quilts (an art activity), Native American Room (examine either Native American life before Europeans arrived, or contemporary artwork from a Native community in Canada that shares a special connection with Deerfield), Memorial Room (learn about the 1704 attack on Deerfield), and About Town (a tour of the center of town).

Cost $5 per student for two hours; $9 per student for four hours

 

History Lab
(September through April) A museum teacher will visit your school with hands-on activities. Available offerings include a 19th Century School Lesson, Dame School (a 17th-18th C. school lesson), Old-Time Toys and Games, Underwear, Lights, a dance lesson, Early American Chores, Immigration, Nuthatch (portrayal of a Pocumtuck woman who left her homeland in the 17th C.), The Roaring 20’s and World War II Homefront, Art and Geometry in American Quilts, Civil War, Colonial Clothing, Alphabet Soup (about the Great Depression), Native American Life,  Speak Up (an elocution lession), Made in America (about colonial imports and exports) Voices from the Past.

Cost $250 for up to 4 hours of program and up to 100 children

The Indian House is also available for birthday parties. Activities include dress-ups, textiles, old-time toys and games, and fireplace cookery (seasonal) and a tea party. The parent need only supply refreshments and decorations! $10 per child.

A teacher may also work with the director of Youth Programs to develop special programs to meet specific needs. In the past, such programs have included activities for blind children, an overnight stay, and cooking an 18th C. lunch on the hearth.

Traveling History Kits
 Traveling History kits are available for loan to schools and educators. These multi-media kits are filled with primary and secondary source materials and reproduction artifacts. Engaging activities are geared toward developing logical thinking and analytical skills. Kits include:
