• Connecticut Valley Historical Museum in Springfield
will display its rare copy of the “The Meritorious Price of
Our Redemption” by William Pynchon. This book, of which only
a handful of copies are known, was the first book banned and burned in
North America in 1650. William Pynchon, the founder of Springfield, Massachusetts,
penned the theological treatise which was published in London. His book
was declared heretical by the General Court in Boston and was banned.
Copies of the book were burned in Boston’s marketplace by the common
hangman. The Museum’s copy of the book was the gift of four Pynchon
descendants in 1936. It will be on display in the “Treasures of
the Valley” exhibit from mid-September through November.

• The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art joins
the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association in "The
Big Read 2007: Fahrenheit 451" program by hosting
"The Big Read for Little Readers." Beginning on Friday,
November 2 at 7:00 p.m. The Carle will host Lois Lowry, author of over
20 novels and two-time winner of the Newbery Medal, in conversation with
Susan Bloom, Professor Emeritus, Simmons College, Boston. Together they
will explore the power of the written word to open doors, to provide choices
and challenges, and to engage readers with the dangers and wonders of
such freedom. This event is free of charge, but does not include Museum
Admission. The Museum will be open to the public that evening until 7:00
pm.
On Saturday, November 3rd local firefighters, in contrast to their role
in Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, will not be burning books
but touting the importance of reading. Join them as they present Museum
storytimes by reading from some of their favorite picture books, handing
out fire hats donated by The Hartford, and sharing tips on fire safety.
Free with Museum Admission.
This event is part of The Big Read, an initiative of the National Endowment
for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services
and Arts Midwest.
